We’ve used Blockbench before, when my son really wanted make an Oyster (?!) for his mod. Now, 3D modelling is great skill to learn but it’ll take a little more patience to master than just using Tynker. ~ New for 2021 ~ Minecraft have teamed up with Blockbench to create a new ‘Minecraft Entity Wizard’ plugin, which makes creating and customising mobs easier than before! You can check out their guide here> Īdvanced: Creating an entirely new mob using 3D modelling. My eldest had fun making Ocelots in to Ferrets and he also had a go at making a Camel out of a horse, but that was hilariously derpy once in game! There is a catalogue of other people’s creations for inspiration and it doesn’t involve any coding. It can also be a little tricky to find your mob in the game, depending on what you’ve named it and what mob it was originally! There are clear instructions though and the easiest thing to do is to re-skin a model that they already have. Once you’ve done a few tutorials then you can create your own projects and make all sorts of silly things happen in your game! My child wants to make a new mob:īeginner: Use Tynker Mob Creator (for either Java or Bedrock), this is a little limited in what can be made, as you’ve only got the models & parts available in their library.

My child just wants to make funny things happen:īeginner: If you have either Education Edition or the Windows 10 Edition of Minecraft you can install Code Connection from the Microsoft store (for free) and then go to Microsoft MakeCode and start with their tutorials – make it rain chickens or give your player super-mega jump abilities! You can create projects with either block-based code like Scratch, or Python or JavaScript.

If you’re choosing option 2 then here are some resources to check out, depending on what your child wants to do and their level of coding skill. There are also many different courses and workshops out there that we haven’t tried, so I can’t really personally recommend them, it might be worth asking in home-ed groups on facebook for reviews from fellow parents before enrolling on anything. One drawback with these courses is that some kids can find them a little ‘slow’ or they don’t quite cover exactly what it is your child wants to achieve, which is why it’s important to figure out what your child wants to create before committing to a course/subscription. Both have step-by-step lessons/courses and include a Minecraft server where your child can invite their friends to play with them in their new modded world. If you’re taking the outsourcing option I suggest checking out Code Kingdoms or Tynker. Option 2 is usually a lot cheaper, so which one you go for may depend on your budget as well as your time and patience! (In the future we hope to run our own online course for this – I did have a ‘real-life’ one planned but covid ruined it lol) So you have two ways you can tackle this problem if you don’t have any idea what you’re doing: 1) you can outsource this to someone who does know what they’re doing or 2) you can learn alongside your child. It could be that they want to do all of these things at once! (Usually straight away, with no patience and expecting you to magically facilitate that with no prior knowledge, amiright?! lol) It could be that they just want to create a new mob, or new ores and items, it could be that they want to retexture the entire world or create a new biome or realm you can travel to.

There are many different facets to a ‘proper’ Minecraft mod and it’s a good idea to have a chat with your child to see exactly what it is that they want to change or create. Minecraft ‘mods’ are just modifications made to the game, either the way it looks or the way it plays and kids absolutely love modding, because it gives them a chance to control how the game works and unleash their creativity.
